Weld RE-5J decorated bus for BBQ Day
1st Place Award for Weld RE-5J Transportation Department at BBQ Day 2025
We hope everyone is enjoying their summer so far. Here at the Transportation Department, we are in full swing getting those buses ready for the new year. Somehow in between doing repairs and cleaning those buses, our team found time to make an amazing float for the Johnstown BBQ Days parade. This year’s theme was Our Town, Your Town, Johnstown. It gave a little room to be creative for a float design but Janice Cochran-Young was up to the challenge. Since she came to Weld RE-5J as our Trainer and now Coordinator of Transportation, she has been the driving force for the Parade designs for the last two years. Before we always just entered a bus and threw a banner on to it. Not anymore according to Janice. She said it’s for the kids and the community. Basically her way of thinking is to go big or go home!  She was the one that turned our buses into a UFO and a Train for last year’s parades in Johnstown and Milliken. Her UFO won 2nd place in Johnstown and the Train won 1st place in Milliken. So for this year, Janice was on a mission to be number one once again.

Well Janice, I am extremely pleased to say you won! Your creativity and hard work payed off and you won 1st place in the Johnstown BBQ Days Parade. Your idea to design and incorporate all the landmarks that makes Johnstown so unique was a hit. From the murals of Main street, the Iconic water tower on County Road 17, the Town Hall, The Randall Hess Stadium at Roosevelt High School to the miniature version of the amazing Scheels Ferris Wheel. (Yes that was our Ferris wheel and not Scheels, even though they donated to the cost of making it.) It was all her idea and we couldn’t be more proud of her!  Janice has made an amazing difference to our Department since she came here from Windsor RE-4. She has 32 years’ experience as a bus driver / trainer and her love of the job has not gone away. Her passion for being here for the kids and training our future drivers is second to none. It shows every day when she comes to work and in her ideas for coming up with an award winning float. Now she couldn’t do it all by herself. She had a team of drivers behind her that stepped up to her challenge. We would like to congratulate our drivers that helped out with the project as well. So here is a big Congratulations to drivers Ken Swanner and his daughter Kaylen Swanner, Shy Cabral, Indra Sanchez, Matt Stewart, Ryssa Gransee, Steve Ioerger, Leslie George, and Leila Chan Tuz. Without your help this would not have been possible and we cannot express how proud we are of all of you for everything you do for this district and this community.
