Attendance

October Count is Coming!

On Wednesday, October 1, Weld RE-5J will participate in Colorado’s Student October Count, a vital statewide effort that determines public school funding based on student enrollment and attendance. We really hope to see all our students in school on October 1—your presence truly makes a difference! Every student in class helps ensure our schools have the resources needed to support learning and growth.

Why it matters

Every student in class on October 1 helps secure funding that supports our teachers, programs, and resources. This data also informs statewide demographics, free/reduced lunch eligibility, and multilingual learner counts.

We understand that getting to school every day isn’t always easy. If your student is facing challenges, reach out to your school’s staff—we’re here to help.

Let’s work together to ensure every student has the opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed. Every day matters!

Weld RE-5J Everyday matters and so do you

In Weld RE-5J schools:

  • We value seeing students every day. Every student matters.
  • 10 days of missed school equates to approximately 3,900 minutes (or 65 hours) of lost instructional time (elementary) and approximately 4,500 minutes (or 75 hours) of lost instructional time (secondary).

In the state of Colorado:

  • A student is counted as habitually truant if the student has four unexcused absences in one month and/or 10 absences in one school year.
  • A student absent 10 percent or more of the days enrolled during the school year is chronically absent. All absences are included - unexcused, excused and suspensions. The rate is the percentage of students enrolled who are chronically absent.
  • Attendance is important. It's also the law.  School Attendance Act - Compulsory School Attendance (822-33-104, C.R.S.)

Reporting an Absence

For Weld RE-5J schools in 2025-2026, attendance coding has changed. When families call to let us know that your student will not be attending school, attendance will be marked as AC, or Absent with Communication. If we don't hear from families, attendance will be marked as AN, or Absent without Communication. We encourage families to let us know whenever a student will miss school. A legal guardian will be required to provide their name in order to communicate about attendance.  Student Handbook Language Adjustments (presented to Board of Education on August 6, 2025)

To report an absence log into the Parent Portal through Infinite Campus. Go to More -> Absent Request to report an absence. Alternatively, you may call the school front office or email before 9:00 am any day your child will be absent or late. Letting us know helps us ensure your child’s safety and opens the door to offer support if needed.  School Attendance Phone Numbers

Medical
For absences due to a physical condition, mental health, or behavioral health, please provide corresponding medical documentation. This can be a physical copy turned into the front office or a digital copy sent through parent portal or email. When we are provided with a note from a medical provider, attendance will be coded as a medical absence. We will work together on a support plan for your student.
