Growing Early Childhood Opportunities in Weld RE-5J
Thanks to the construction of Elwell Elementary and major enhancements at Milliken Intermediate School and Milliken Elementary School, Weld RE-5J has been able to significantly expand early childhood programming to meet the needs of our youngest learners.
The Elwell Early Learning Center (EELC) now offers three classrooms, each with two sessions (AM and PM). Every classroom serves 16 students with a teacher and paraprofessional, maintaining a 1:8 ratio for personalized care. This year, EELC serves 89 students and will grow to its capacity of 96 as more children turn three throughout the year.
At the Milliken Early Learning Center (MELC), enhancements allowed us to open three new classrooms, bringing the total to five. For the first time in district history, we offer two full-day preschool classrooms alongside three half-day classrooms. MELC currently serves 106 students and will reach its capacity of 115 as the year progresses.
These changes mean more families have access to high-quality early learning, including full-day preschool options, a first for Weld RE-5J. By creating safe, nurturing environments and expanding opportunities, we’re ensuring every child has the best possible start.
