Welcome Back - August 2026
As we head into the 2026-2027 school year, Superintendent Scott Nielsen welcomes students, families, and staff back for another year of learning and growth. He shares his appreciation for families who choose our district and for the dedicated staff members who continue to invest in our students each day. He emphasizes the district's commitment to fostering a sense of belonging for all and encourages families to partner with schools to help students get connected and engaged. Scott also highlights the district's ongoing long-range planning efforts and invites the community to learn more and provide feedback through the district website. Reflecting on the year ahead, he speaks to the importance of belonging, embracing challenges as opportunities for growth, and drawing inspiration from one another as the school community works together to make it a great year.

Scott Nielsen is the Superintendent of Weld RE-5J School District, a position he has held since 2023. A Northern Colorado resident for more than two decades, Scott brings more than 30 years of experience in education and a career grounded in relationships, student support, and educational leadership.
Before joining Weld RE-5J, Scott spent more than 25 years with Poudre School District, where he served most recently as Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Schools. In that role, he supported more than 14,000 students and oversaw the district’s athletic programs. During his tenure with Poudre, he also served as a principal and middle school assistant principal.
Scott began his career in education as a special education teacher, working with students who required additional support to find success in the classroom. Prior to moving to Colorado, he spent five years coaching high school soccer and basketball in Minnesota. His experiences as a teacher and coach helped shape his belief in the importance of building strong relationships with students and families.
As Superintendent of Weld RE-5J, Scott is committed to creating a safe, supportive, and high-quality educational experience for every student. His leadership focuses on strengthening relationships, supporting educators, creating meaningful learning opportunities, and ensuring students have opportunities to discover their strengths and pursue their interests.
Scott holds a master’s degree from the University of Northern Colorado and has completed principal and educational leadership preparation through Colorado State University.
